Texas Instruments DRV8251ADDAR

The Texas Instruments DRV8251ADDAR is an integrated brushed DC motor driver featuring an N-channel H-bridge, charge pump, and integrated current sensing using an internal current mirror architecture. Designed for 4.5V to 48V operating voltages and capable of delivering up to 4.1A peak output current, this driver eliminates the need for large power shunt resistors by providing current sensing and regulation directly through the IPROPI pin. This approach saves PCB area and reduces system cost while enabling microcontroller-based stall detection and load condition monitoring. The external VREF pin sets current regulation thresholds during start-up and stall events without requiring microcontroller interaction. A low-power sleep mode achieves less than 1µA quiescent current at 24V. The device supports 1.8V, 3.3V, and 5V logic inputs, features a PWM control interface, and is housed in an 8-pin HSOP package with PowerPAD™ for enhanced thermal performance. Integrated protection includes under

DESCRIPTION:

The DRV8251A device is an integrated motor driver with N-channel H-bridge, charge pump, current sensing feedback, current regulation, and protection circuitry. The charge pump enhances efficiency by supporting N-channel MOSFET half-bridges and 100% duty cycle driving. An internal current mirror architecture on the IPROPI pin enables current sensing and regulation, eliminating the need for large power shunt resistors, thereby saving board area and reducing system cost. With the IPROPI current sense output, a microcontroller can detect motor stall or load condition changes. An external voltage reference pin (VREF) determines the current regulation threshold during start-up events and stall conditions without requiring microcontroller interaction. Low-power sleep mode achieves ultra-low quiescent current consumption by shutting down most internal circuits. Internal protection features include power supply undervoltage lockout, output overcurrent, and device overtemperature. The DRV8251A is part of a family of devices with pin-to-pin, scalable RDS(on), and supply voltage options to support different loads and power rails with minimal design changes.
