Texas Instruments ADS1220IPWR

The Texas Instruments ADS1220IPWR is a precision 24-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC) designed for high-resolution measurement of small sensor signals in industrial and portable applications. Featuring a flexible input multiplexer (MUX) that supports two differential or four single-ended inputs, this device integrates a low-noise programmable gain amplifier (PGA) with gains up to 128 V/V, two matched programmable excitation current sources, a 2.048V internal voltage reference with 5ppm/°C typical drift, an oscillator, a low-side switch, and a precision temperature sensor. The ADS1220 achieves data rates up to 2000 samples-per-second (SPS) with single-cycle settling, and at 20 SPS the digital filter provides simultaneous 50Hz and 60Hz rejection for noisy industrial environments. Power consumption can be as low as 120µA (typical) when operating in duty-cycle mode with the PGA disabled, making it suitable for battery-powered and portable instrumentation.

Description:

The ADS1220 is a precision, 24-bit, analog-to-digitalconverter (ADC) that offers many integrated featuresto reduce system cost and component count inapplications measuring small sensor signals. Thedevice features two differential or four single-endedinputs through a flexible input multiplexer (MUX), alow-noise, programmable gain amplifier (PGA), twoprogrammable excitation current sources, a voltagereference, an oscillator, a low-side switch, and aprecision temperature sensor. The device can perform conversions at data rates upto 2000 samples-per-second (SPS) with single-cyclesettling. At 20 SPS, the digital filter offerssimultaneous 50-Hz and 60-Hz rejection for noisyindustrial applications. The internal PGA offers gainsup to 128 V/V. This PGA makes the ADS1220 ideallysuited for applications measuring small sensorsignals, such as resistance temperature detectors(RTDs), thermocouples, thermistors, and resistivebridge sensors. The device supports measurementsof pseudo- or fully-differential signals when using thePGA. Alternatively, the device can be configured tobypass the internal PGA while still providing highinput impedance and gains up to 4 V/V, allowing forsingle-ended measurements.Power consumption is as low as 120 µA whenoperating in duty-cycle mode with the PGA disabled. The ADS1220 is offered in a leadless VQFN-16 or aTSSOP-16 package and is specified over atemperature range of –40°C to +125°C.
