ST VNH5019A

The VNH5019A-E from STMicroelectronics is a full bridge motor driver designed for a wide range of automotive applications. It incorporates dual monolithic high-side drivers and two low-side switches, with the high-side driver built using ST's proprietary VIPower® M0 technology, which efficiently integrates a true Power MOSFET with an intelligent signal/protection circuit on the same die. The three dice are assembled in a MultiPowerSO-30 package with electrically isolated lead-frames, offering improved thermal performance via exposed die pads for harsh automotive environments. The device delivers up to 30A output current, supports PWM operation up to 20 kHz, and features 3V CMOS compatible inputs (INA, INB) for motor direction and brake control. Diagnostic feedback is provided via DIAGA/ENA and DIAGB/ENB pins, while the CS pin monitors motor current with a proportional output.

Description:

The VHN5019A-E is a full bridge motor driverintended for a wide range of automotiveapplications. The device incorporates a dual monolithic high-side drivers and two low-sideswitches. The high-side driver switch is designedusing STMicroelectronics’ well known and provenproprietary VIPower® M0 technology that allowsto efficiently integrate on the same die a truePower MOSFET with an intelligentsignal/protection circuit. The three dice are assembled in aMultiPowerSO-30 package on electrically isolatedlead-frames. This package, specifically designedfor harsh automotive environments offersimproved thermal performance thanks to exposeddie pads. The input signals INA and INB candirectly interface the microcontroller to select themotor direction and the brake condition. The DIAGA/ENA or DIAGB/ENB, when connectedto an external pull-up resistor, enables one leg ofthe bridge. It also provides a feedback digitaldiagnostic signal. The CS pin allows to monitorthe motor current by delivering a currentproportional to its value when CS_DIS pin isdriven low or left open. The PWM, up to 20 KHz,lets us control the speed of the motor in allpossible conditions. In all cases, a low-level stateon the PWM pin turns off both the LSA and LSBswitches. When PWM rises to a high-level, LSA orLSB turns on again depending on the input pinstate. Output current limitation and thermalshutdown protect the concerned high-side inshort to ground condition. The short to battery condition is revealed by theoverload detector or by thermal shutdown thatlatches off the relevant low-side.Active VCC pin voltage clamp protects the deviceagainst low energy spikes in all configurations forthe motor. The CP pin provides the necessarygate drive for an external N-channel PowerMOSused for reverse polarity protection.
